My name is Dennis Lewis and I’m a trained editor, copywriter, creative writer, and independent academic. I have wide work experience in international settings, having lived in Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. I’ve been in the Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge tri-city region my home base ever since 2018, when I started teaching communication to undergraduate engineers in the University of Waterloo’s Communication in the Sciences Initiative. Most recently, I taught in the University of Waterloo’s Arts First Program.
I completed my B.A. and M.A. degrees in English at the University of Toronto and my PhD in Creative Writing and English at the University of Essex in England. My research background is in English Literature, contemporary poetics, conceptual writing methods, literary criticism, literary theory, rhetoric and composition theory, and travel writing.
I’ve more than 20 years experience as a writing and communications instructor in North American and international universities. As a university instructor at the American University of Sharjah in the U.A.E., I edited and collaborated with Pearson Education in the publication of the course textbook Majlis of the ‘Others’: A Reader for Writers in the Gulf. Additionally, while teaching at universities in Thailand, I led workshops on communication skills and consulted with businesses, hospitals, and the Thai Army Special Forces.
Prior to moving abroad, I worked as an editorial assistant at the CBC National Radio Newsroom in Toronto.
I have a passion for the English language, telling stories, communication, poetry, and the worlds of history, culture, the arts, and ideas.
As a freelance editor, copywriter, creative writer, and educator with active ties to the School of Engineering at the University of Waterloo and the innovative University of Waterloo Arts First Program, I believe I am perfectly situated to help clients throughout Canada, across North America, and beyond with their editing and copywriting needs.
