Eddie Velazquez

My name is Eddie Velazquez, I’m a multimedia journalism hailing from the El Paso, Texas area.

I am a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and consider my upbringing and my growth along the borderland an incredible asset. I am bilingual, completely fluent in English and Spanish and feel confident to complete all tasks assigned to content creators in both languages; from interviewing people whose primary tongue is Spanish, to writing and copy editing a piece in Spanish, as well as close captioning a video for Spanish speakers.

I have a passion in studying and telling stories about all kinds of subjects and emanating from all types of sources. My young career has taken me in all sorts of directions, with some of my favorite stories ranging from investigating unfair treatment at a hospice-care facility for elderly women after employees left me an anonymous tip, to interviewing Muslim artists who tell their stories about growing up in a post 9-11 America and telling the story of a stateless girl from Thailand whose sole dream was to compete at an environmental science fair in the U.S. but couldn’t do so because of Thai government policy.

Growing up in a world that prioritizes ease of access to information and the delivery of news content through all platforms, I have made it a priority to diversify the streams of content in which the news outlets I am employed by serves the community.

An example of this is my effort to start a podcast at my collegiate newspaper, where as the entertainment editor I invited local artists onto our show to discuss the local arts scene and other subjects.

I am dedicated to immersing myself in the community, putting all of my skills to the test and delivering the most accurate and timely versions of a community’s informative truth.
