Writer, editor, and designer with a flair for technical communication
MiTek makes updates to its machinery consistently. I wrote the text and designed this PDF for an e-newsletter, which targets management at our customers' plants. It informs our customers, who are familiar with these two products, about upcoming improvements. This graphic is a departure from my department's usual approach, which is to contribute a short article. I took a different approach so that our customers could scan the content more quickly.
MiTek released an entirely new system that linked several pieces of existing machinery. Working primarily with sales, I determined an angle for the article and wrote the copy. The article is intended to provide an overview of the system and to explain how the system could benefit customers. It was published shortly before the largest trade show in the building components industry, a trade show where customers could see the system in person.
<NOTE: Download the original PDF and open with Acrobat to see the interactive features. I also created a highly similar PDF that appears interactive but is compatible with FireFox and mobile devices as a companion to the interactive PDF.> MiTek offers its customers the ability to customize their plant layouts. This article provides concrete examples of this ability. Working with sales, I wrote copy, selected a photograph and illustrations, and designed an interactive PDF. I wanted a compact way to display five plant layouts while not overwhelming customers with too much text. Using the interactive features of Adobe InDesign accomplished this.
MiTek sells the Ranger RS lumber retrieval system for its customers in the building components industry to automate part of their workflows. For this article, I interviewed several SMEs. Working with our sales manager, I decided to introduce the capabilities of the machine, explain its benefits, and describe some of its available options. The article is intended to appeal to customers by providing a solution to their labor shortages and boosting their productivity.
MiTek uses laser scanners for safety on some of its machines. These scanners sometimes require replacement. Proper installation of the scanners is critical to the proper functioning of the machines. For this service bulletin, I started by interviewing an SME and consulting OEM documentation. I then observed the procedure and took pictures, and I wrote and designed the service bulletin after.
MiTek manufactures the CDS (Component Delivery System), a series of modular conveyors, for the building components industry. For this manual, I was heavily involved in the project, attending engineering reviews and planning marketing material from the beginning. As the project progressed, I interviewed SMEs, attended reviews, and operated the machinery to gather information. I wrote the content (excepting some of the legal boilerplate) and created illustrations for the manual. By the time I started this manual, I had improved my technical illustration skills, and this manual reflects that (compared to the other manual that I posted here).
MiTek manufacturers the RailRider Pro press for the building components industry. For this manual, I interviewed SMEs, consulted OEM documentation, and observed procedures to gather information. I wrote the content (excepting some of the legal boilerplate) and created the illustrations so that the content was simple and usable.
MiTek added a horn to one of its machines. I observed the installation and took photographs and notes. From there, I wrote the procedure and created graphics to illustrate the process as clearly as possible.
MiTek's splash screen for its MatchPoint BLADE saw needed a redesign. I used Adobe Illustrator along with a style guide and color palette to give the splash screen a more visually appealing look.
