Business/Finance Journalist and Content Strategist

With seven years of business and finance journalism experience, I’m skilled at cutting through complexity. Let me help you make dollars and sense.

My ability to do ‘business without the boring’ was part of the reason I was recruited as a Presenter/Anchor for the launch of Ticker TV, which is currently Australia’s only dedicated business news channel. Think of this as the Cheddar of Australia, where I report on global markets and economics in a part-time capacity.

Armed with qualifications in Business/Communications, specialising in Journalism/Marketing, I’m focused on developing content strategy for leading brands across financial services (fintech and wealth management), professional services (tech and SaaS) and ecommerce (DTC). Pardon the pun, but with my domain expertise in finance and commercial understanding, it simply adds up to hire me.

I worked in-house as the only Finance Journalist and sole Sub-Editor at Australia’s best-known publicly-listed asset manager, InvestSMART. My role included interviewing fund managers and leading investment professionals on the topics of global markets, personal finance and wealth management. As a journalist working in a commercial capacity at a fintech, my goal was nailing the art of the ‘soft sell’ while producing content that was actionable and ‘general’ in nature. In addition to launching video and podcast series — ‘Market Watch’ and ‘Property Point’ — I was also entrusted with white papers for investors that required deeper financial analysis.

Demonstrating a capacity for deep research, I was recruited as a Research Assistant at Bond University early in my career. Soon after, I started as a Senior Journalist at Business News Australia, where I was also entrusted as the Editorial Coordinator for client work and branded campaigns. This role was both commercial and creative, reporting directly to the Group Editor. Clients included large-cap public companies, peak marketing and government bodies, a major retail franchise and a private university.

Part of the core team behind the Australian Young Entrepreneur Awards, our answer to 30 Under 30, I’ve developed a passion for small business, startups and entrepreneurship in general. I’ve helped performance monitor this campaign while writing lead articles on entrepreneurs. I also script and host the events as MC in major capital cities for large corporate crowds. Through this process, I’ve forged relationships with business heavyweights and local thought leaders.

Credit scoring gets a shake-up

Paywalled. See intro: "Next time you check your credit score when applying for a loan or line of credit you may get a pleasant surprise. But that’s not a blanket statement. First-home buyers may benefit from Australia’s new comprehensive credit reporting system, a shift in line with international standards. From September it became easier to turn around your credit position. However, it will depend on several variables. Plus, the ongoing crackdown by lenders on mortgage finance could offset some benefits. For the unacquainted, Australian credit reporting agencies Equifax, Experian and Illion are required to provide a free independent credit report to consumers at least once a year. Each agency places a different weight on different financial events."

Can machines make us better investors?

Paywalled. See intro: "Ever wondered why economists sweat over every word spoken by a central bank governor? Or why your stocks are making headlines, for all the right reasons, but their share prices quickly travel south on the news? It has a lot to do with natural language processing (NLP), something you'll be hearing a lot more about in the future. Put (relatively) simply, NLP is computers making sense of language without human intervention. Its take-up has been a long-time coming, with interest growing since Alan Turing's publication on computing intelligence in 1950, that spiralled into a recent blockbuster movie. Machine learning, deep learning, supervised learning, and unsupervised learning, all fall under the NLP oversight. You don't need to learn the ins and outs of these terms. You should, however, take a moment to learn how these processes can influence share prices and stock markets."
