Continually transforming ideas into written stories

Hi! I’m Maria Bernadette Romero. I get to buy shiny new things because of writing. I’m also an occasional music photographer at night.

I write not just because it is a requirement in my work but because I find liberty in it. I write even if it means 10 missed calls from my sister or boyfriend and neglected invites from friends to dine out in our favorite sushi house. I write because I live in a mad country and writing is my escape from it so that somehow I could convince myself that I am not part of the madness.

I write because GGM, Murakami, and Ricky Lee encouraged me. I write because I don’t want to suffer the same thing Charlie of ‘Flowers for Algernon’ suffered because of idiocy.

I write because I have many voices in my head, urging me to tell stories despite sore feet after a day of coverage and heavy eyelids after a whole night of catching up on my TBR files.

Lastly, I write because I love how words are transformed into something magically beautiful. I’d like to believe that writing could change a person’s life, and if I’m lucky, I could change the impaired system of my beloved country.

Dear Future Kids: You Will Never Be My Retirement Plan

I grew up with the thought that I have to save money just so my parents would be lying in the most comfortable bed when their twilight comes. So I promise, I will never be the kind of mother that would cause your secret mental breakdown at 2:00 am. That’s why as early as now, I’m trying my hardest to save as much as I can. You’re never going to be my retirement plan, honey, because I know how much that sucks.

When the Country’s top Leaders are the Perpetrators of Fake News, What do we do to Combat it?

Traditionally (and as it should be), we get our daily news updates from trusted sources and media outlets that follow strict codes of media practice. But thanks to the internet, anyone can now easily publish pieces of content that it’s hard to know who’s factual or not. And it seems like we now live in a universe where there are no boundaries left between fact and fake.
