Patti Short

Technical Writer, Graphic Designer, Writer

Technical writer and creative thinker

I've made my home base, for now, in the Seattle, WA area. My journey into tech started with a degree in Computer System Administration with a minor in programming. I realized there was a need for documentation, for example, step-by-step procedures for troubleshooting and walk-throughs. As my technical writing career took off I made it a point to keep up with the advancing technology and learn programming languages, such as PHP, Python, HTML5/CSS3, and JavaScript.

That curiosity and the desire to return to design work opened a door that could never be shut. When I learned how to build my first website, I realized I found something that gave me the freedom & versatility I was looking for in my work. Now I've added front-end development to services, where I can use my creative skills and eye for detail to write clean, elegant code.

I am an experienced, self-taught, and self-driven technical content and UX writer, and desktop publisher with over 30 years of experience; 22 years as a professional technical writer and eight years as a visual designer. I am passionate about solving hard problems with innovative solutions. I am also passionate about the success of the IT professional (developer, system administrator, or devops). I am currently taking full-stack courses online through Codecademy and SkillCrush.

Cookbook

A personal project where I wanted to challenge myself by creating a cookbook in MadCap Flare. The experiment helped me determine that this type of document is best done in something like Adobe InDesign because MadCap flare was not meant to be used for desktop publishing.
