Rick Lehtinen

Editor, Ghostwriter, Technical Writer, Writer

My goal is to provide for you clear and accurate technical documentation and compelling marketing communications. Let me meet your needs.

After 10 years of building and operating television production facilities, I developed a freelance writing practice specializing in that industry. It was not long before I was invited to be a technical editor for Broadcasts Engineering magazine. I wrote features and columns, solicited and edited articles written by industry experts, and travelled widely to attend industry conventions and visit our clients, on my own or with our sales managers.

Eventually, one of my columnists hired me to join his team in Phoenix, where I helped predict the future of the semiconductor industry. Our beat was the convergence of computers, video, and telecommunications. To keep close to the market, I continued my freelance writing, and developed some speaking assignments.

To learn more about computers, I took every course Microsoft offered, and started earning certifications. The guys and gals at the whiteboard seemed to have a lot of fun, so after more training, I became one of them. Soon, I was filling assignments all over Metro Phoenix. My dream job was joining the adjunct faculty of Mesa and Gateway Community Colleges. While there, my Microsoft students "hired me" to teach for the emerging Cisco Networking Academy program. After many more classes and certifications, I became a fully-authorized Cisco Authorized Academic Instructor. Following that, the Academy itself hired me to write courseware and examination items used worldwide.

All of this came together in my current role as a technical writer, usually on contracts, but sometimes as an embedded content specialist seated with the developer teams. I have created user guides, installation manuals, press releases, white papers, and marketing collateral in several of these roles, and each engagement has been interesting and challenging.

A strength I bring is a background in technology with an ability to come up to speed quickly when dealing with something new, and the skill to turn this into meaningful artifacts that explain a process, product, or technology clearly and simply. Please check my resume and portfolio to see whom I have helped to meet their goals. Then ask for me to help you on your project.

Thank You!

Cheers,

Rick Lehtinen
