With summer on its way, it seems like a good time to talk about how are you can make going to the beach more enjoyable if you have eczema. In the past, going to the beach used to be a thought that was full of dread for me growing up. Because what would usually happen is that it would be super hot, sunny, and dry (I’m originally from Northern California). And while I would enjoy the sun in the moment, no matter how much sunscreen I put on, by the end of the day my skin would have absorbed so much heat that the pores on my face would become enlarged giving off all this excess heat and in turn become very very itchy leaving me sunburned, swollen and bloody by the time I got home...
I experienced my worst moments with eczema in the 1990s to early 2000s. And nearly 100% of the time, I experienced them alone. There was no Internet, no Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. And eczema websites at the time were minimal, offering some advice about moisturizing after bathing or showering to lock in moisture and to speak to your dermatologist about getting steroid creams. I maybe knew one person in high school and one person in college who also visibly had it and most others had no idea what it was and wondered if it was contagious...
When your skin is covered in rashes that look like they could be the result of a bacterial infection, it’s very hard to feel proud of yourself. At least that was my experience growing up. My years of childhood, being a teenager, and a young adult in my twenties are some of the hardest years for me to remember. They were years filled with the uncertainty of what my skin was going through and if it would ever fully recover or improve. And on top of that were the feelings of uncertainty, insecurity, and low self-esteem from just being young and unsure of what my future would hold. Who would I become as an adult? Would I even be competent enough as an adult? Would I even make it to adulthood?

Gluten-free cosmetics: Is this just another beauty trend? Is it just another marketing scam to get you to haul over your current collection for something that sounds healthier? Or is there any legitimacy to this growing beauty genre? Let’s find out…
As a bona fide lip product junkie, I have had my fair share of lip balms. On any given day, I can easily have at least three to five different lip products in my purse –the majority of them being various types of lip balms. In my experience, when it comes to lip care, the greener the product the better. Not only for the obvious environmental and animal-protective benefits but because they just taste better!

In the beauty industry, there is a rapidly growing trend and demand for cruelty-free beauty brands. With PETA exposing the animal testing practices of countries like China in 2012 and their regulations towards products sold in the country, there has been raised awareness and action taken to remove animal testing altogether worldwide by organizations like PETA, the Humane Society, protesters, consumers, and even the European Union! Yet, despite increased education on the graphic and unfair nature of animal testing, it is still practiced in countries like the United States and China, which is currently the heavy-hitter and main tilting point of the beauty industry and its future with cruelty-free cosmetics. Why is that? How is that even possible? Well, first, let’s find out what animal testing is.
